Why it's iconic
Land of red elephants
One of Africa's largest wildlife ecosystems — Tsavo East and West together cover 22,000 km² of raw red-earth wilderness.
History & heritage
Tsavo East and West together form one of the largest national parks in the world (22,000 km²). The infamous 'Man-Eaters of Tsavo' — two lions that stalked railway workers building the Uganda Railway in 1898 — gave the region its legendary, untamed reputation. Today, the park's distinctive red elephants (their hides stained by Tsavo's rust-coloured volcanic soil) remain its enduring symbol.
