Why it's iconic
The wild north
Semi-arid northern Kenya, home to the 'Samburu Special Five' — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich.
History & heritage
The Samburu reserve, set along the lifegiving Ewaso Ng'iro river in the arid north, is the ancestral land of the Samburu people — cousins of the Maasai. The 'Samburu Special Five' (Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich) are found almost nowhere else in Kenya. It was here that Joy and George Adamson released Elsa the lioness in the 1960s, immortalised in Born Free.
