Why it's iconic
Flamingo lake & rhino sanctuary
A Rift Valley jewel famous for its rhino sanctuary and the shimmering pink rim of flamingos lining the alkaline lake shore.
History & heritage
Established in 1961, Lake Nakuru's alkaline shoreline once carried the title 'Greatest Bird Spectacle on Earth' for its rim of millions of lesser flamingos. The park was later fenced and gazetted as Kenya's first rhino sanctuary — today protecting both black and white rhino in the safety of the Rift Valley walls.
