Why it's iconic
Elephants beneath Kilimanjaro
Massive elephant herds walking the marshes with snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro as the backdrop — the most iconic photograph in Africa.
History & heritage
Amboseli, from the Maa word for 'salty dust', became a National Park in 1974 and a UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve in 1991. Its swamps are fed year-round by underground springs flowing from melting snows of Kilimanjaro across the border, sustaining one of the largest free-roaming elephant populations in Africa — many of them studied continuously since 1972 by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project.
