Why it's iconic
Misty highland forest
High-altitude moorland, dense rainforest and tumbling waterfalls — home of the legendary tree-hotels where guests watch wildlife by lamplight.
History & heritage
The Aberdare Range (Nyandarua) was the wartime sanctuary of Mau Mau freedom fighters in the 1950s. Its tree-hotels — Treetops and The Ark — became famous after Princess Elizabeth ascended the throne while staying at Treetops in 1952. Today they offer the rare chance to watch wildlife by lamplight from a forest canopy at 2,000 m.
